Wiper Blades In the Southern Heat

NEVIL TIRE SERVICE

A LITTLE THING- WIPER BLADES?

Wiper blades are one of the most neglected component on todays vehicles.

Ninety percent of all driving decisions are based on a clear unobstructed view of the road ahead, which means good visibility is essential!

Wiper blades are made of rubber and a mix of other substances. Weather effects the life of blades along with use or what we call the flip flop wear and tear.

Windshield temperatures in the south can reach 170 degrees which actually bake the rubber over time. Vehicles parked outside at work or home also can change their contact pattern due to what we call “ parked rubber”.

Most experts recommend replacing blades at least once to twice a year.

Most of us do not think about them when we are not using them. However they need to be there when we do need them.

The largest fear is during a hard rain, when the wipers are a must to see, the blade comes apart scratching an expensive windshield, and creating a dangerous driving condition.

Wiper blades are not very expensive, and we can put a set on for you.

Serp Belt, When Will It Break? Avoid On Side of Road Breakdown.

NEVIL TIRE SERVICE

SERPENTINE BELTS

Serpentine belts are drive belts that run many systems, such as electrical power, cooling and overheating, power steering, as well as air conditioning.

When this belt breaks, your engine will stop working, possibly causing serious damage to the engine or components.

Ten out of ten broken serp belts end up causing a break down, stranding the vehicle, possibly at the least expected time, in the worst place, day or night.

This belt has a tremendous job, it spins thousands of times a minute. Many times visual inspection will not reveal small cracks on the inside of the belt which weaken the belt.

Good news is replacing the serp belt periodically can go a long way towards minimizing the risk of a breakdown or serious engine damage caused from belt failure.

Most car manufacturer's do not have a recommended replacement guide, however, according to the Car Council, most serp belt failures are in the four to five year life of the belt, or around 70 thousand miles.

WE RECOMMEND PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE ON THIS ITEM.

When to change Radiator hoses?

NEVIL TIRE SERVICE

RADIATOR HOSES

Your engine is basically a big piece of steel, metal designed to create power.

Look at it this way, steel and metal rubbing at high rates of speed against one another.

The engine requires lubrication ( oil ) and coolant ( antifreeze) radiator, fan, and hoses to circulate the coolant at high rates of return speed.

The job of the upper and lower radiator hoses is to deliver and return engine coolant from the radiator to the engine. The fluid in these hoses is hot, and a chemical that creates havoc inside the radiator hoses.

Visual inspection of the outside of the hoses does not tell us the wear and tear damage on the inside of the hoses. We do squeeze the hose for softness and cracking noise, however this is not a perfect science by no means.

Failure of these hoses create overheating, winter, summer, spring or fall. Failure can possibly cause serious engine damage.

Gates Corporation and the Car Care Council recommends replacement of these hoses every four years or if they feel soft on the ends because there often is no visible, early warning signs of failure.

Running an engine hot and extreme overheating many times results in engine replacement or major engine expense.

This is a small investment to minimize the risk of radiator hose failure.

Why Tune Up?

NEVIL TIRE SERVICE

NEED A TUNE UP?

A tune up is usually a service overlooked until the vehicle begins running noticeably bad. What is also overlooked is by this time, much of what the tune up cost could had been saved in fuel and operating cost by preventative tune up maintenance.

The nature of an engine ' tune up' has changed considerably over the years, however the basics of how a gasoline engine works has not. Clean gas and air needs to be driven to the vehicles cylinders where combustion initiated by a spark plug creates power to move the vehicle.

A standard tune up, or spark plug replacement, done at suggested maintenance interval will make an engine start easier, improve fuel economy, and operate more efficiently. Basically cost less to drive a tuned engine than one that is not.

An item overlooked sometimes in the tune up process is the fuel injector system that delivers fuel to the spark plug and cylinders. If the amount of fuel is restricted the responsiveness in performance and proper use of fuel is restricted.

It doesn't take much to clog or restrict a fuel injector as the injector opening is less than the size of a pinhole. It only takes about 8% to 10% blockage to cause the engine to misfire! This misfire cost you operating money in performance and at the pump!

We recommend flushing the fuel injection system when doing a tune up service.

We recommend inspection of the spark plugs at least every 50 thousand miles.

If your vehicle is running badly, in todays vehicles, computerized electronics are linked to efficient operations. We suggest a small investment of diag using equipment designed to evaluate all components linked. In other words the spark plugs, wires or fuel system may not be causing the rough running of the vehicle.

It does not take much misalignment ;

TO WEAR TIRES OUT QUICKER

INCREASE FUEL COST

CREATE HARDER ENGINE OPERATION

Over time as your car experiences the knocks and bumps of being driven over imperfect roads, pot holes, and rough dirt roads, your wheels become out of alignment.

Think about it, the suspension and steering components of the vehicle are constantly being punished while going down the road.

The suggested wheel alignment check and adjustment is recommended:

ONCE A YEAR OR WHEN NEW TIRES ARE PURCHASED-WHICHEVER COMES FIRST.

Once an irregular wear pattern is set in tires due to misalignment, the pattern does not go away.

A very small investment to get the most efficiency from your tires, ride and fuel!

Know your rights when it comes to vehicle repair and maintenace.

Did you know?

You are not required to take your vehicle to the dealer in order to maintain your warranty.

A warranty cannot require the use of a specific brand of replacement parts offered by your selling dealer.

No matter the brand of vehicle you drive - foreign or domestic -Nevil Tire service can help protect you and your vehicle's warranty. By using quality Auto Parts and service, our skilled technicians can perform all of your vehicle's maintenance and repairs without voiding your warranty.

Frequently Asked Questions By Owners Of New or Leased Vehicles:

Q.

Do I have to use the manufacturer's original equipment parts to keep my warranty valid?

A.

Legally, automakers cannot specify which parts are used to complete your vehicle's service. You may use any brand-name quality parts such as CARQUEST Auto Parts to replace fan belts, hoses, brakes, exhaust or chassis parts and more.

Q.

What do I have to do to keep my car or truck's warranty in effect?

A.

Make sure your vehicle is serviced at the intervals specified in your owner's manual or warranty booklet and keep clear records of your vehicle's maintenance. Be sure to have the date, parts installed, vehicle identification number and mileage recorded on the invoice. Keep these receipts in a safe place. If you have a service log in your owner's manual or warranty booklet, use it.

Q.

My car is a leased vehicle. Am I responsible for maintenance?

A.

Even if you lease a vehicle you are responsible for all maintenance and repairs to keep the vehicle in good working order as outlined in the owner's manual.

Q.

What parts should be replaced and at what intervals should these services be performed?

A.

Check your owner's manual. It will give you all of the information you need regarding specific parts and service intervals. Make sure to read it thoroughly and note any exceptions or severe service notations. Warranties are there to protect the consumer, but you must follow the requirements.

Q.

What if my new car needs repairs other than regularly scheduled maintenance such as a brake job or other repairs? Do I have to return to the dealer for these repairs? What if these repairs are covered under my warranty?

A.

The choice of where to have your car serviced and repaired is yours. However, you will probably have to take the car back to the dealer for any repairs covered under warranty. Thoroughly check your warranty to be certain which repairs are covered.

Q.

How does the quality of aftermarket parts compare with original equipment parts?

A.

Some are manufactured by the same supplier and may even be warranted longer than original equipment parts.
Air Filter Knowledge

NEVIL TIRE SERVICE

AIR FILTERS

What function does the air filter perform?

The engine requires a mixture of fuel to air ratio to operate efficiently.

The filter's job is to allow delivery of the least amount of contaminated air to this mixture.

The air filter does become restricted or clogged in the same manner your home air conditioning filters do.

In the restricted or clogged air filter, an inadequate amount of air is let into the engine cylinder which makes it necessary for more fuel to be injected into the cylinder causing decreased gas mileage, more spending at the pump and overall less efficient vehicle operations.

As a rule, the filter needs to be checked every oil change of 3000 miles replacing the filter every three oil changes or 10 thousand miles or if too dirty for proper air flow.

Air filter maintenance is good for your vehicle, and ultimately better for your pocketbook.

Brake Awareness

NEVIL TIRE SERVICE

BRAKES

It is dangerous and costly to wait too long to change your brake pads!

There are things going on beyond pressing on a brake pedal.

Brake systems consist of pads, rotors, computerized messaging, brake lines, wheel and master brake fluid cylinders. There is a lot going on when pressing the brakes at high speeds or any speed.

The life of brake pads depends on the vehicle and driving habits. Heat and moisture are enemies of the braking system. Visual inspection of the fluids, brake lines, rotors/drums and pads need to be done every oil change.

Brake pads have a special designed surface attached to a metal/ steal backing plate.

It is important to change the pads when this surface is getting too close to the backing plate for safety and prevention of damaging the rotor that the pad applies to stopping the vehicle.

The brake lines are pressurized lines. They can become cracked and brittle over time and use. The brakes system depends upon being pressurized to properly work.

The brake system depends of brake fluid to be the pressurizing agent. Burnt or contaminated fluid can or may cause unneeded problems with braking.

Do not take risk with your vehicle brakes and ability to safely stop!

Brakes are a cost and life value savings!!

What is a Tire ?

TIRES ARE NOT JUST TIRES

WHAT IS THE DEFINTION OF A TIRE?

A TIRE IS A CONTAINER OF AIR DESIGNED TO CARRY A LOAD.

This container of air designed to carry a load, whether it be an automobile, truck, riding lawn mower, boat trailer, utility trailer, bicycle, an airplane landing or taking off, etc, is what carries the load.

Although a Tire is a container of air designed to carry a load, some feel a Tire is a Tire is a Tire. Over years the manufacturing of tires has become much more technical creating much better results in tread wear, handling, and application specific designs.

While it is true some tire designs could be multi purpose in some applications, many are specific in the class of vehicle, how it is used, mileage wear needs, high speed needs, traction, and etc.

For example: some basic classifications of vehicle are SUV, LIGHT TRUCK, PICK UP, TOURING, SPORTS AND ECONOMY vehicle. Several brands with similar tread designs will fit the bill of SUV, Light Truck, or Pick ups, that can be further distinguished by how these vehicle's are used by the owners.

Depending on how you use the vehicle, will the tire do the job you need, will it deliver the best performance, safety and mileage life for you in consideration of what you are paying for it?

Nevil Tire has been in the tire business 22 years driving the same roads you do.

A tire is a container of air designed to carry a load, however a Tire is NOT JUST A TIRE. It is what is between you and the direction you are going, and it needs to be right for you!

Watch a short video by Michelin on How Tires are made.
